Track your pet the GPS way

GT40 GPS device for pets

A Chinese company has come up with a new use for GPS receivers – attach them to your pet and never lose them again! The GT40 is, to be fair, slightly unwieldy, so would only fit bigger animals at the moment, but it does come fully loaded with both a GPS receiver and, somewhat bizzarely, quad-band GSM and GPRS!

More details after the jump.

At frist I thought this was in case you see your dog rifling through your neighbour’s bins, so you can call him up and tell him to stop it! In reality, though, it enables the GPS device to communicate your pet’s location to you via your mobile phone, which, come to think of it, is a bit more useful!

Mind you, I’d love to see a dog’s face if you called him up when he miles from home and shouted “walkies!” That’d confuse the bugger!

It’s a shame the size of the device means it won’t work on cats. Well, it would, but they wouldn’t travel very far, as they’d have the equivalent of a ball and chain strapped to their neck! Imagine seeing exactly where your cat has been at night, though. One of mine used to go missing for days, and would frequently come back with a freshly-killed rabbit, deer, or even a small child!

Mind you, if you did see the extent of their territory, it could make your hair stand on end. Another of my cats got squashed by crossing a busy main road once too often. Perhaps it’s best not to know after all!

Unfortunately, the GT40 pet tracker is only available in China at the moment, but it can’t be too long before a similar device is sold elsewhere in the world (and hopefully with a smaller form factor).
