Teens uninterested in GPS phones

A new study into teenagers’ mobile phone preferences and behaviour conducted by Online Testing eXchange (OTX) has shown that the majority of 13-17 year olds are uninterested in GPS phones. When asked what features they would want in a mobile phone, GPS came out just second from bottom, with only 16% thinking it would be a good idea.

Nokia, you might think, might be slightly startled by these findings, given the billions they’re spending in order to enter the GPS marketplace in a big way. But they don’t need to lose any sleep just yet.

Read on after the jump.

The survey, remember, asked 13-17 year olds. Cast your mind back to when you were 13-17. Firstly, could you drive? Nope! So what use would you have for a car-based GPS device? In other words, as gadgets go, GPS wouldn’t be one you’d have any use for.

Secondly, how big was the area in which you used to roam? School, your friends’ houses, the town centre and a few clubs (depending on your age and how old people thought you were!). All of these places were extremely well known to you, so you had no reason to buy a GPS device, as you never got lost!

Finally, if you did need to go places outside of your territory, you had your own personal taxi – your dad! So again, no need for Nokia to worry!

GPS phones are one of those rare inventions that will have a dramatic impact on large parts of our lives. Not just how we find our way around the world, but how we find local services, shops, or anything we want, at the touch of a button.

Your average 13 year old isn’t likely to be aware of this just yet!
